Choosing between nestable and straight-wall totes is a serious decision, and the right answer depends entirely on where each tote will work. In this article, we’ll explain when nestable and straight-wall totes function seamlessly and where you should avoid using a specific tote type.

Nestable totes are built with angled walls, allowing empty units to stack inside one another. This offers major freight and storage advantages since stacked units will take up just a fraction of the space compared to  straightwall totes. For operations that frequently ship or store large quantities of empty containers, this translates directly to lower inbound freight costs and better use of storage space. However, the trade-off is interior volume. Because nestable totes are tapered, the usable space at the bottom of the tote is smaller than the top opening suggests.

Straight-wall totes, on the other hand, offer consistent interior dimensions from the opening to the base of the tote. They maximize usable volume for a given footprint, which is an important factor on conveyor lines. Automated sorting systems in particular can benefit from the predictable exterior profile that straight-wall designs offer.
